Chapter forty-three

Reunion

Qing watched the scarabs rushing towards them, his chest heaving for breath as the rush of adrenaline still coursed through his veins.

“I really hope they can’t enter,” Morgana said.

Knut drew an arrow, but Ghida placed a hand on his arm and shook her head. “Killing one now will not make a difference, and attacking may invite them inside.”

He slowly lowered his bow, lips stretched thin.

Qing cast Smite on his staff, muscles tensing as his friends retreated a few steps further into the pyramid.

Sand spewed into the air as the massive bugs skittered forward, until, as one, they halted. Just outside the pyramid’s stones.

Morgana sighed deeply in relief.

“Thank the sun,” Ghida said.

Qing straightened, cracking his back. “We need to keep moving.” His voice sounded strained even to his own ears. But the fight with the scarabs had slowed them, costing precious time.

How long before the ritual completes, and Rufus summons the devil?

The others nodded, checking their weapons and standing aside to let him pass, taking the lead as they walked deeper into the Augrian pyramid.

As they descended the narrow passageway, the air cooling, Qing glanced at the hieroglyphics. Unlike the ones from Egypt he’d seen online and in books, these had far more detail and were beautifully painted. Maybe that was how the ones in Egypt looked when they were fresh.

He reached out to run a finger along the stones, but as he did, a sudden sharp pain lanced up his arm. He hissed through clenched teeth and snapped his hand away, careful not to bump into the wall behind.

“What is wrong?” Ghida asked.

“Touching the wall made it feel as if I put my hand into a pool of ice.”

She grabbed his face, and warmth spread from her touch, all the way down to his toes. She stared into one eye, then the other, before nodding to herself. “You must be careful not to use too much magic. Bonecaller magic comes too easily here, and you may underestimate its cost.”

He shrugged uncomfortably. “I’ll be fine.”

I have to be, or we’re all dead.

“A bow drawn past its breaking point turns useless real fast,” Knut said.

“What do you want me to do?” Qing said, snapping, pushing Ghida’s hands away. “Cleo is right in there being sacrificed to the literal Devil, and I’m supposed to calm down because I might strain myself?”

“Don’t be a dick,” Morgana said, pointing her coiled whip at him. “You know what the princess means.”

“I…” Qing frowned, and turned away, stomping down the passageway. “We need to hurry.”

The walls seemed to close in as they went deeper, and Qing was careful not to touch them, especially as the air thickened with magic. Just as the confined space threatened to become suffocating, the way opened into a colossal chamber. He stepped onto a ledge overlooking the vast space, eyes widening at the sight. The room itself was circular, with five darkened doorways leading on. His light barely lit the other side, even raised to the maximum. There were no torches inside the pyramid.
